Personal Reflection 09/04/2014
So, in light of the recent events with VEISHEA, my philosophy professor (who is from Iceland) started discussing how the United States police system doesn't work very well. He pointed out that the United States has the highest number of prisoners per capita among first world countries. This got me thinking about the need for change in the way we deal with prisoners and police. There's got to be a better way of dealing with criminals than just putting them in jail. I mean, some of these people that are incarcerated are people that haven't really done anything that serious (e.g. public intoxication). Incarceration should be used as something that keeps dangerous people (e.g. murderers, rapists, etc.) and instead of jail time for these relatively little things, just increase fines heavily so that there is actually room for people that are truly dangerous.
